In 2006 Claiborne invited viewers to join him on his personal journey to trace his ancestry by reporting on a new DNA test. He learned that his ancestors were of the Ashanti people in Ghana. He traveled to the nation's capital city of Accra to learn more about his relatives and the land where his family once lived, and brought a home video camera to document his trip for a follow-up piece on the weekend edition of "GMA."

Prior to joining ABC News in 1986, Claiborne was a general assignment correspondent for WNYW-TV in New York City.
