Designer (Carpentry/Designer) on ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition"
This Wisconsin-born, California-raised entrepreneur has accomplished many feats and has started many successful companies. She may be an unlikely vision on a construction site; however she is an extremely accomplished and skilled carpenter and homebuilder. Self-taught and with no formal carpentry training, Paige Hemmis is rarely to be found without a tool of some kind in her purse.
During her undergraduate work at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Hemmis became a licensed Emergency Medical Technician and taught first aid and CPR to students, graduating with bachelors degrees in both Theology and Psychology. In 1999 she formed “Simply Elegant Weddings” to help couples plan their special day. In 2001 she founded a real estate company that bought houses, renovated them and developed innovative rent-to-own solutions for tenants who couldn’t afford the steep downpayment usually required for purchase. Though she didn’t have deep pockets, Hemmis used her tenacity and resourcefulness to learn all aspects of construction, including drywall, cabinetry, electrical and plumbing. Then, in 2004, she sold both companies to pursue her career as co-host, carpenter and designer on hit ABC television show, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”
In her years in the construction industry, Hemmis found a void in the marketplace when it came to women’s tools and products. With that in mind, she founded Tuff Chix, Inc., dedicated to performance workwear for women that is both durable and fashionable. Tuff Chix is an outgrowth of her own experience and features such items as pink work gloves, boots and tool belts. In 2006 Hemmis released her first book, The Tuff Chix Guide to Easy Home Improvement, to inspire other women to tackle DIY projects with confidence. She is developing TV and film projects through her production company, Tuff Entertainment Group, and is working to expand the Tuff Chix product line.
In 2009 Hemmis debuted as a contestant on ABC’s competition reality show, “The Superstars,” in which she and her Gold-Medalist partner, Bode Miller, took second place. She considers her role on “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” a blessing, and feels extremely fortunate to make her living helping others. “It’s amazing that we get the opportunity to travel our great country helping families redefine the place they call home. It’s an honor to help, and because of it, my life will be forever changed.”
Hemmis is a dedicated philanthropist and humanitarian. Both in her entertainment and real life, she contributes extraordinary time and support to such worthwhile causes as Habitat for Humanity, Heroes at Home, the Starkey Hearing Foundation and The Innovative Giving Foundation.
