The “Dancing with the Stars” Finale Earns 6-Month Highs for ABC in its Time Period

ABC Tuesday Prime (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 12.8 million and 2.4/7 in AD18-49):

  • The Net delivered a Tuesday season-high in Total Viewers and its best Adult 18-49 rating on the night in 9 weeks – since season-premiere Tuesday on 9/24/13.

    “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (8:00-9:00 p.m. – 9.3 million and 2.5/7 in AD18-49):

At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” spiked 35% week to week in Total Viewers to deliver its 2nd-biggest-ever audience and was up for the 2nd week in Adults 18-49 (+4%) to equal a 5-week high (since 10/22/13).

  • “S.H.I.E.L.D.” was the No. 1 series in its time period with Men 18-34 for its 9th consecutive first-run airing and continued its run as Tuesday’s No. 1 TV show with Men 18-49.

“Dancing with the Stars” (9:00-11:00 p.m. – 14.6 million and 2.4/7 in AD18-49):

From 9:00-11:00 p.m., the season finale of “Dancing with the Stars” made ABC the No. 1 network in the 2-hour time period with Total Viewers, key Women (W18-49/W25-54), Teens 12-17 (tie) and Kids 2-11. Dominating its final half-hour from 10:30-11:00 p.m., as Amber Riley won the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy, “Dancing” delivered 15.4 million viewers and a 2.6/8 in Adults 18-49 to lead its nearest competition (CBS’ “Person of Interest” = 11.6 million and 2.1/6) by 3.8 million viewers and by 24% in young adults.

  • Building over its Monday finale by 9% in Adults 18-49, “DWTS” scored a 10-week high best since its season premiere on 9/16/13.

  • In Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, the “Dancing” finale produced ABC’s best time-slot numbers in 6 months with entertainment programming – since 5/21/13.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 48% currently, from 46% at the same point in 2012. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-

to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
