Prior to joining both ESPN and ABC Sports, he worked for The Sports Network (Toronto, Canada) from 1986-90, where he was the anchor on the sports desk and the host of the Toronto Blue Jays magazine show.

Jones, a native of Toronto, graduated from York University in Toronto with a bachelor of arts degree in economics in 1985. While at York, he was a four-year member of the basketball team.
