ABC News Correspondent
Sonya Crawford is a special events anchor and correspondent for ABC News based in Washington, DC. She contributes reports to the network's overnight and early morning news programs "World News Now” and "World News This Morning,” as well as to "Good Morning America” and other ABC News broadcasts and platforms.
Ms. Crawford joined ABC News in November 2002 as a Washington-based correspondent for NewsOne, the network's affiliate news service. Reporting from the nation's capital, she covered the 2004 Republican National Convention, President Reagan's funeral and the war in Iraq. She also reported from Rome on Pope John Paul II's funeral and the conclave that chose his successor.
Prior to joining ABC News, Ms. Crawford worked as a reporter and substitute anchor for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, beginning in 1999, where she regularly reported on the impact of religious faith in people's lives and other human interest stories. Prior to joining KNBC, she reported from and held substitute anchor duties at the Orange County News Channel.
From 1994 to 1997 Ms. Crawford was an associate producer at "Dateline NBC” in Los Angeles, where she won an Emmy Award for producing a story on the OJ Simpson trial. Prior to that she worked in radio, where she wrote for KNX 1070, and then served as a reporter and assistant producer on Public Radio International's "Marketplace.”
Ms. Crawford began her career in broadcasting in Seoul, Korea, where she was born and raised, working as a features reporter for Korean Broadcasting Systems (KBS-TV). She covered both the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul for KBS-TV and the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, for SBS-TV.
Ms. Crawford holds a BA in Political Science and Communication from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. She is an active member and past national board member of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA).
